Nutcracker Charcuterie Board

If you’re looking for an easy way to bring some Christmas fun to the table without turning it into a whole production, this Nutcracker Charcuterie Board fits the bill. It’s festive, flexible, and works just as well as a snack board as it does a light lunch or party spread.

This is also a great hands-on activity for homeschool families. Kids can help plan the layout, place the food, and make creative decisions—no baking required. Think of it as part art project, part snack time.

The basic idea is simple: you’re arranging everyday charcuterie items into the shape of a nutcracker. Nothing needs to be perfect, and substitutions are easy. Use what you have, swap ingredients your kids prefer, and don’t stress the details. As long as there’s food and a recognizable face, you’re doing it right.

You can keep it savory, add fruits and veggies for balance, or lean into sweets if this is more of a holiday treat. This board is meant to be fun, not fancy. (Although if you have a kid who will likely pursue a career in design or fancy food production, get as fancy as you like!)

Ingredients

  • 5 oz Brie cheese (for cuffs and shoulder details)
  • 3 oz salami
  • 8 oz chorizo
  • 8 oz Black Diamond Cheddar cheese
  • 2 oz regular Cheddar (square block works best)
  • 1/3 cup pitted olives
  • 5 breadsticks
  • 3/4 cup pretzels and mini crackers
  • 2 oz smoked pigtail cheese
  • 6 lettuce leaves
  • Small amount of bologna and bell pepper (for facial details)

Note: Don’t worry if you don’t have everything listed. This board is very forgiving. For instance, if your kids aren’t fans of olives, try using capers, roast almonds, or sun-dried tomatoes instead.

How to Make the Nutcracker Charcuterie Board

Create the Face
Start by placing the square Cheddar cheese near the top center of your board. Trim the corners slightly to soften the shape if you like. Use olives to make the eyes, eyebrows, and mustache. Add small pieces of bologna or hot dogs for the cheeks.

Add the Hair, Hat, and Arms
Lay breadsticks above and around the head to form the hat for the nutcracker charcuterie. Pull apart the smoked pigtail cheese and use the strands for hair and the beard. Peel the chorizo, slice it lengthwise, and place the pieces on each side as arms.

      Build the Body
Place salami slices at the bottom of the board to create a base for your nutcracker charcuterie. Shape the Brie into small cylinders and use them as cuffs and shoulder pieces. Trim the wax from the Black Diamond Cheddar and use it as a belt. Cut the remaining cheese into bite-sized pieces and arrange them off to one side for easy grabbing.

        Fill in the Sides
Arrange pretzels and crackers evenly on both sides of the nutcracker. Tuck in lettuce leaves and bell pepper slices wherever you need color or extra crunch.

          Adjust and Serve
Step back, adjust as needed, and then let everyone dig in. Perfection not required.

            Homeschool Tip

This nutcracker charcuterie board works well as a group project for mixed ages. Younger kids can place crackers and olives, while older kids help plan the layout or handle slicing (with supervision). It’s a simple way to mix creativity, fine motor skills, and food prep—plus lunch gets made along the way.

            Instructions

            1. Form the Nutcracker’s face. Trim the corners of the Cheddar cheese and place it on the board, centered on top. Add eyes, eyebrows, and a mustache using olives. Arrange the cheeks using Bolognese sausage or hot dogs.
